My Old Girl Wix Enjoyed Her Shopping Trip This Morning
At 13 years old, Wix isn't the youngest labrador around. But she's
generally happy and healthy. Deaf as a doorknob, though :)
rain. It was early enough on a Saturday that I knew there wouldn't be
too much crowd yet. So I decided to take her with me for a bit of a
trip to the shops. First stop was the bakery to grab some Hot Crossed Buns. While waiting
our turn to be served, a 4 year old ran to Wix with her arms wide
open, and just wraped those arms around Wix's neck. The dog seemed
rather amused, and was wagging her tail. Parents also seemed amused
albeit a bit embarassed. I discussed how I couldn't give them the dog
to go home with, and I wasn't ready to adopt a 4 year old yet. They
laughed. Wix was sniffing all the wonderful bakery smells, especially
with the MOUNDS of hot crossed buns waiting to be sold. The parents
had to quite literally rip the kid apart from Wix, who was still quite
patient. I think she'd enjoyed the attention. Tart that she is :) Next stop, Briscoe's to return something.
I didn't leave Wix outside, just took her photo like that to show she was at Briscoe's ;) She did indeed come with me, and service slowed
down at all cash registers because everyone was looking at her and
talking to me about her. Meanwhile, she was laying down on the floor,
totally bored. Deaf as she is, she didn't hear a thing we said about
her despite saying her name many times. So, she got a good 2 block walk downtown, visit to the bakery, cuddles
from a kid, smells galore, a boring episode at the housewares store,
and a ride in the car where she loved sticking her head out of the
window. For some strange reason, she's now exhausted!!!

Are you really sure she is deaf? Animals I know lean toward "selective hearing". They hear you when they want to. My vet and I are convinced my 18-year-old cat is deaf (normal ageing issues). My husband constantly runs into examples to prove us wrong. I think he's struck some deal with the cat.

She's not *completely* deaf. she does hear some things at certain ranges. High pitched very loud voices, she'll hear. We *thought* she was selectively hearing, but realised there's more to it than that. She used to be really scared of thunder, as in "climb in your lap protect me daddy" kinda scared. Now, she doesn't even realise there's thunder.
