Selecting My 15 Best Food Photographs
Yesterday, I asked a few friends to pick 15 photos they thought were my best photos from my food photography collections:
I should have added the following set to pick from:
Between the three sets, that's nearly 250 photos to chose from, a fair amount!
I did not set any criteria, on purpose. I simply asked for them to pick the 15 best photos. Some of these people are experienced photographers. Some are experienced cooks. Some work in marketing & media. Everyone brought a slightly different background to their selection. I recently read a great article by David Saxe, 'Let's not abandon photography to the "experts".' In that article, David talks about the fact that several experts simply could not agree on what makes a good photo! In some ways, asking non-experts from varied backgrounds also gave me a variety of answers.
Some photos that came up a few times surprised me, I wouldn't have picked them. One photo was picked by everyone. One photo was picked by 5 of the 7, but not by me! A couple were picked by 4 people. Five photos picked by 3. And a bunch picked by one or two people. A total of 62 photos were selected, one or more times. But I needed to pick only 15!!! Not that I am entirely relying on those picks, but it is useful to have another view on my own work.
Here are the 9 photos that were selected 3 or more times, with the most popular ones first:

Poached pear stuffed with goat cheese

Fishcake with lime, olive oil and chili dressing.
I'd be interested to know what YOU think. Do you agree with those food photography being my best ones? If not, which ones do you think should appear here? For what it's worth, this is my own selection of what I thought my 15 best food photos were.
